Blue Heroes in the Making
29 July, 2010
With plastic production and consumption at an all time high in our daily lives, it’s so great to see some of our influential young Aussies grabbing the Great White by the tail and leading by example.
With the likes of David de Rothschild at the helm of the school, as well as the plastic bottle boat Plastiki (just arrived from the States), the students from Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College said a big NO to plastic water bottles as they make a stand for our planet.
The bottles have been wiped out of school life and the tuckshop, and instead the students will fill up at the faithful water bubbler. It’s really a two fold winner, the planet gets thrown a life line and the girls get to socialise over a sip or two at the bubbler. Surely this is the more sustainable way to tread, but let’s not end it at the schools. The wasteful use of those damn plastic bottles is a mass social trend that needs to be stopped. One in all in!!
Quick Stats
- It can take up to 3 litres of water to produce the packaging for 1 litre of bottled water.
- If not recycled properly they can take up to 1000 yrs to break down
- Just remember you’re paying up to $3 for something that’s free
- Plastics kill 100’s of thousands of marine creatures every year
Solution
Grab a reusable bottle, use a filter at home and make sure you pick up any discarded bottles you see and recycle them!
Live it Love it Look after it!
