JourneyHow to Help

You can be a blue hero too! Follow some of these tips and you'll be on your way to helping conserve our oceans.

You at home can be a Blue Hero and make a positive change towards keeping our marine life and coastlines clean and beautiful. A list below gives you examples of simple things you can do every day to reduce your personal impact on the ocean as well as save you money on things like your electricity bill.

  1. Buy food and other products with less packaging or reusable/recyclable packaging instead of those in non-recyclable packaging. Did you know? The energy saved by recycling one plastic drink bottle will power a computer for 25 minutes.
  2. Recycle all of your household’s waste newsprint, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal. Every time we use a new product, it’s just one more piece of rubbish added to the already huge pile on our earth.
  3. Leave your car at home two days a week (walk, bike or take public transportation to work instead). It is always great to catch up on reading on the bus or train, or a great way to keep fit and clear your mind before you have to sit at a desk all day.
  4. Choose eco friendly washing up products. Try to use phosphate-free laundry and dish soaps. Just think if the very air WE breath was filled with chemicals. That’s what polluted oceans mean to marine life.
  5. Support local family farmers and fishers, and help reduce climate change        caused in part by food transportation, via air, ship, and truck. Plus fresh organic produce is much yummier to cook with!
  6. Be a conscious consumer and try to buy local, environmentally responsible seafood as much as possible. This promotes sustainable management of marine resources, and preserves a way of life for our future. Ask your local restaurant if they buy sustainable produce!
  7. Say no to plastic bags and take your reusable environmental or cloth bag when you go shopping. It is now really common for supermarkets to stock these bags, don’t forget to ask at the checkout!
  8. Take unwanted, re-useable items to a charitable organisation or op shop. You never know, your old trash maybe someone else’s treasure!
  9. At work, start an office recycling program for office and computer paper, cardboard, etc. Use scrap paper for informal notes to yourself and others. Print things on recycled paper.
  10. Remember to pick up your rubbish and litter near beaches. As beach crowds increase, so does the amount of litter left behind.  It makes family BBQ’s at the beach so much more enjoyable for everyone!

Lead by example…encourage friends and family to do their bit as well. Just remember, we’re all in this together!
